PROJECT SUMMARY
The state of Maryland awarded Trigen-Cinergy Solutions
a $469 million contract to supply all the steam and electrical utilities
and chilled water for cooling for the campus' energy intensive central
district. Trigen-Cinergy Solutions will be responsible for the production,
distribution and maintenance of the steam and electrical distribution
systems. Additionally, Trigen-Cinergy Solutions will be responsible for
operation, distribution, and maintenance of the chilled water system for
cooling of sixteen of the University's buildings located in the energy
intensive central district. This energy program includes all "energy"
assets, service, performance and future build out needs. Trigen-Cinergy
Solutions also acts as the University's agent in the procurement of natural
gas, fuel oil and excess electricity when needed.
The energy program is the result of the formation of
a partnership between the University of Maryland System's flagship campus,
a private company and a state quasi-public economic development authority.
Trigen-Cinergy Solutions will design and construct $71 million worth of
new equipment as part of this energy program, including a new electric
power production plant to generate electricity for the University's 150+
buildings.
The University will benefit in a number of ways from
this program.
- The University should realize savings of over $120
million over the term of the contract.
- The University will gain increased reliability of
utility systems, increased comfort and enhanced indoor air quality.
- The program guarantees performance of energy deliveries
through contract terms and conditions.
- The system will result in reduced air emissions of
NOx by approximately 9,800 tons and CO2 by 3.5 million tons.
- Trigen-Cinergy Solutions established a $2 million
academic program to promote a hands-on educational experience.
- The program will provide approximately 400 construction
related jobs during the 3 year design and construction phase of the
system.
- Trigen-Cinergy Solutions preserves 20 jobs by transferring
employees from public to private sector.
