PROJECT SUMMARY
On August 3, 2000, the Springfield Water and Sewer Commission unanimously awarded United Water (previously US Water) a 20-year contract worth $263 million for managing its wastewater systems. The wastewater system consists of the Springfield Regional Wastewater Treatment Facility (WWTF), 29 Pumping Stations, force mains, CSOs, West Street Metering Station, and Mill and Locust Odor Control Facility. The Springfield Regional WWTF is located on Bondi Island in the City of Agawam, adjacent to the City of Springfield. The facility treats approximately 40 MGD, has an average design capacity of 67 MGD and a peak flow of 180 MGD. The plant serves 275,000 people in seven municipalities including the City of Springfield and is the third largest activated sludge plant in New England.

The operating performance guarantees for this project are valued in excess of $100 million. The Springfield contract, including $10.4 million in capital projects, is the largest ever signed by United Water. The capital project will include a 70-ton dryer to convert sludge to usable soil amendment products. United Water is taking full marketing responsibility for the products derived from this process.
