Southwest Florida Water Management District is one of five water management districts in Florida. The SWFWMD encompasses 16 counties (10,000 square miles) and 4.2 million people. The SWFWMD is responsible, as authorized in Chapter 373 of the Florida Statutes, for managing and protecting water resources within west-central Florida. Majority of funding is received from property taxes. The SWFWMD coordinates with state and local governments to solve water problems while protecting the environment.
