The
Special Unit for South-South Cooperation (SU/SSC), established
by the UN General Assembly in 1978, hosted in UNDP, supports
a wide range of collaborative efforts among developing countries'
South-South cooperation. To facilitate attainment of the UN
Millenium Development Goals, and accelerate economic and social
progress, this cooperation may also be "triangular",
i.e., a technical cooperation initiative among two or more members
of the G-77 that receives support from northern donors or international
organizations.
The SU/SSC is committed to expanding the
understanding of the wide range of tools that can promote
development. One important tool for providing both infrastructure
and social services in support of development objectives is
Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs). PPPs can be developed
within an individual country, through technical cooperation,
or through triangular cooperation.
Through these mechanisms, the resources of
the public and private sectors can be combined in providing
cost effective answers to a wide range of challenges. While
PPPs can not be applied to all of the issues and concerns
that we face, a clearer understanding of how they can be created
and managed will aid in the appropriate application of PPPs
to a number of projects and programs.
That is the purpose of this website. Our
intent is to provide guidelines and clear examples of success
- and failure - in PPPs. We can learn from both of these about
ways to build effective partnerships that promote sustainable
development.
We invite you to explore these pages, and
join in the spirit of collaboration that is central to the
Special Unit for South-South Cooperation.
